Another Eventful Year in the Books
For us at Varghese & Associates, P.C., there is no such thing as a “typical year”, and 2021 was no exception to that rule.
From landmark court cases to government controversy, there was no shortage of media coverage. And when news breaks, Vinoo is on standby, ready to be tapped for his expert knowledge of the law.
So without further ado, here are our top 10 most noteworthy media events of the year.
1- Emergency Application Filed to the U.S. Supreme Court for Teachers Opposing Vaccine Mandates
On September 30, we filed an Emergency Application to the US Supreme Court on behalf of NYC public school teachers opposing Mayor de Blasio & NYC Health Commissioner Dr. Dave Chokshi’s unconstitutional vaccine mandate. We were quoted in every major newspaper and interviewed by The Wall Street Journal and 1010 WINS.
Though the emergency application was denied by Justice Sotomayor, the war isn’t over as we filed for certiorari (full review) and are awaiting a decision.
2 - The New York Times Chronicles the Dismissal of our Client's Case and Quotes Vinoo
Our client was the coach of the DCH Racing Dragon Boat Club until he was arrested in October of 2019 for allegedly abusing “five female team members, two of them minors” (The New York Times). Following his arrest, he was relieved of his coaching duties. We were able to secure a dismissal on his behalf.
3 - Sole Sponsor of the Manhattan District Attorney In-Person Debate
We were the sole sponsor of 77 WABC’s District Attorney debate moderated by Dominic Carter.
Carter kept the debate alive and thriving by asking the candidates about hot-button issues surrounding this race, as well as a question asked by us regarding asset forfeiture funds being reallocated.
The candidates provided insightful answers, and each showed off his or her knowledge and vision for the DA’s office, all while keeping things interesting by going at each other’s throats.
4 - Vinoo Teaching at Harvard Law School
Harvard Law School once again invited Vinoo as a visiting faculty member for its Trial Advocacy Workshop (TAW).
TAW gives students the opportunity to embark on an intense three-week course that enhances their abilities and understanding of trial and evidence law. Vinoo kept his Harvard students on their toes and prepared them for a mock trial in the Boston Federal Court.
5 - Legal Minute Radio Series—77 WABC NY First Episode aired on August 16
Legal Minute is a radio and online-based series made in partnership with 77 WABC Radio NY focused on providing listeners with informative content about legal issues.
Our proven team of criminal defense attorneys has spent years fighting and winning cases in the criminal justice system. Our experience, passion, and creativity has won us countless court cases and we provide a public service by informing and educating listeners about important legal issues.
6- Former NYC Mayor, Rudy Giuliani, Interviews Vinoo on the day Rudy Was Suspended from Practicing Law
Following our sponsorship of the Manhattan DA Debate, Vinoo was asked by 77 WABC to be a guest on Rudy Giuliani’s radio show.
During their time together, they spoke about each other’s early careers as prosecutors, the Derek Chauvin trial, Giuliani’s law license suspension, and his right to defend the former president amid calls to #ArrestTrumpNow.
7 - Derek Chauvin/George Floyd Trial Coverage
Without a doubt, Derek Chauvin’s trial is the landmark trial not only of 2021, but also for the decade. Because of his expertise and his prior op-ed about Chauvin deserving a fair trial, Vinoo was called on by networks such as CBS, NBC, HLN, Newsmax, and COURT TV to break down every aspect of this trial ranging from the performance of Chauvin’s lawyer, and his appellate chances.
8 - Three BBC interviews about Cosby, the Michigan School Shooter's parents, and Ghislaine Maxwell
BBC called on Vinoo for his opinions on three separate occasions in 2021. He broke down Cosby’s appellate victory and release from prison. He then detailed the criminal liability of the Michigan School shooter’s parents and the civil liability of the school when both parties failed to take preventative action. He then spoke about the Judge Nathan the scales of justice in the Ghislaine Maxwell trial.
9 - Kyle Rittenhouse Trial Coverage
The case of Kyle Rittenhouse, let alone the verdict, has set the nation ablaze with one side claiming he was a murderer, and the other side championing him as a Second Amendment protector.
Vinoo was once again called on by networks such as HLN, Newsmax, & FOX to cover the details of this case, poke holes in the prosecution’s arguments, and explain what will be next for the infamous Kenosha shooter.
10 - John Catsimatidis, Billionaire Owner of 77 WABC, interviews Vinoo
Vinoo was asked to join the billionaire owner of 77 WABC and Gristedes Super Markets on his show along with Lidia Curanaj and former NY Governor George Pataki.
Vinoo spoke primarily about prosecutorial misconduct and how to curtail it.
