Mr. Varghese was selected for inclusion into the list of New York Metro Super Lawyers®  from 2015 - 2018 for his impressive accomplishments and sharp legal insight. Attorneys are selected by a rigorous peer-reviewed process based on their high-level legal talent, passion, and innovation in their respective fields. Mr. Varghese is proud to be among the top 5% of attorneys in the state chosen for this truly elite and prestigious honor.

In May 2014, Mr. Varghese was named a Rising Star by the New York Law Journal, the preeminent attorney newspaper. The New York Law Journal stated that Mr. Varghese exhibited the first-rate legal skills and dedication and respected reputation worthy of being chosen for this honor. Mr. Varghese was one of 42 attorneys selected from over 230 who were nominated for the prestigious list, and he was one of only two small firm attorneys to win.

The Journal went onto say that Mr. Varghese’s “record of accomplishments demonstrates that he is a top contributor to the practice of law,” that he “took on tough criminal challenges and delivered crucial arguments in trial and appellate courts.” Mr. Varghese was honored by this recognition.

The Advocate

Vinoo Varghese advocates vigorously for his clients. Rather than dabble in criminal defense, Mr. Varghese lives and breathes it. In 2006, after six years as a prosecutor, Mr. Varghese founded Varghese & Associates. In victory after victory, the firm’s clients have seen their charges dismissed and their freedoms restored. The firm has been able to help them avoid arrest, preserve their rights intact, and resume their personal lives. Mr. Varghese’s leadership has resulted in consistent achievement and success for the firm’s clients.

Varghese & Associates defends individuals and companies in all types of criminal proceedings, white collar matters, internal corporate investigations, and asset forfeiture cases. Mr. Varghese has tried nearly 30 criminal cases to verdict, written over a dozen appellate briefs, and convinced many prosecutors not to continue investigations. His experience proves his ability to advocate effectively and aggressively for his clients. Mr. Varghese is quoted often in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the New York Law Journal, NY1, Crain’s New York Business, and other major publications. He has also been interviewed widely by media sources regarding his noteworthy representations.

In April 2014, The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100—an “invitation-only organization composed of the premier trial lawyers from each state in the nation who meet stringent qualifications as civil plaintiff and / or criminal defense trial lawyers”—selected Mr. Varghese for inclusion.

According to the organization:

“Selection is based on a thorough multi-phase process which includes peer nominations combined with third-party research. Membership is extended solely to the select few of the most qualified attorneys from each state who demonstrate superior qualifications of leadership, reputation, influence, statute, and public profile.”

Each member of the distinguished Top 100 “possesses the knowledge, skill, experience and success held by only the finest and best lawyers in America.” Mr. Varghese is honored to be part of this group.

In November 2013, the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (NACDL) lauded Mr. Varghese in court-filed papers as a “courageous attorney” for his stalwart defense of clients, the United States Constitution, and the criminal defense bar. Specifically, the NACDL praised Mr. Varghese for his stand against the Manhattan District Attorney’s subpoena of privileged attorney work produced while defending schoolteacher Richard Hovan. Immediately prior to the submission of papers by the NACDL and the Legal Aid Society supporting the quashing of the subpoena, the Manhattan D.A. withdrew the subpoena.

Mr. Varghese began his legal career in the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office. From 2000 to 2006, he worked successfully as one of New York’s youngest senior prosecutors. As a young assistant, he was unique among his 500 colleagues in that he handled criminal appeals while simultaneously trying cases. Among his many notable achievements, Mr. Varghese headed the “Assault on Police Officers Program,” an investigative unit dedicated to prosecuting attempted murders of police officers.

While working for the government, Mr. Varghese received a thorough education in the criminal justice system. This experience gained him the respect of the court—first as a prosecutor, then as a defense attorney. His education as a prosecutor would teach him how to negotiate with his former government colleagues, secure dismissals, and obtain reduced charges for his future clients.

Mr. Varghese is proud of his extensive involvement with local, regional, and national bar associations. From 2010 to 2014, he served on the Board of Directors of the Asian American Bar Association of New York (AABANY). From 2007 to 2012, he chaired the Solo and Small Firm Practice Committee at the New York County Lawyers’ Association (NYCLA).

Both organizations frequently ask him to speak and moderate continuing legal education (CLE) courses, including Accounting For Lawyers. Mr. Varghese enjoys speaking at these institutions, and for the better part of the last decade has played an active role in Second Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Denny Chin’s historical courtroom reenactments at national and regional conferences held by the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). In 2012, Mr. Varghese was named one of the NAPABA’s Best Lawyers Under 40—a testament to his significant accomplishments in the legal arena, and in service to the Asian-Pacific American community.

Additionally, Mr. Varghese is a former board member of the North American South Asian Bar Association (NASABA), as well as its current Criminal Justice Committee co-chair. He is also a former board member of the South Asian Bar Association of New York (SABANY). Throughout the years, Varghese & Associates has sponsored events at a number of these bar associations.

Mr. Varghese contributes much of his own success to his education, and is committed to giving back by providing instruction and guidance for the next generation of attorneys. He graduated from Brooklyn Law School, New York University, and Chaminade High School. Mr. Varghese has taught the Intensive Trial Advocacy Program at Cardozo Law School (2010-2014), Business Boot Camp at Brooklyn Law School, and Trial Advocacy Continuing Legal Education courses for various bar associations.
